Minister of Communication underlines news agencies’ role in Mediterranean

Minister of Communication, spokesman of the Government, Hassane Rabehi on Tuesday in Algiers stressed the news agencies’ role in helping the Mediterranean countries to adapt to the positive changes.

In his opening address at the 28th General Assembly of the Alliance of the Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN), Rabehi said that media, notably news agencies have an "important role" to "consolidate and put forward the experiences we had in the process of consolidating democracy in the emerging countries of the Mediterranean southern shore."

"News agencies have a role in the adaptation to the positive changes occurring in the region countries, which thrive to consolidate democratic governance for the sake of their peoples. It reflects the conviction of their political systems and the inevitable outcome of progress and development which led to the promotion of good governance practice," he said.

In this regard, the minister affirmed that "Algeria which is firmly attached to the principles of genuine democracy, national values, States’ sovereignty, non-interference in their international affairs and good neighborhood, will spare no effort to support the Mediterranean news agencies action, in the interest of our common media.

Algeria has always been open to dialogue and traditions of consultation with the players of the sector of media and communication."

Referring to the role of news agencies in the current era, the Government spokesman said that "news agencies have huge responsibilities in raising awareness and dispelling doubts about the processes launched, but also the feeling of hopelessness which could affect one or more fringes of the society because of the spread of "fake news,” which do not reflect Governments’ good intentions to promote good governance and deepen democratic practices."

"Our goal is to provide the subscribers of our Agencies with regional and international news from reliable sources, based on our belief that media is a preparation tool to engage in economic, cultural and political competition, in addition to their role in guiding local and international public opinion," he added.

"In view of their historical buildup of know-how and professionalism, we consider the News Agencies as a reference in the world of communication. The combination of their efforts guarantees the spreading the values of peace, solidarity and tolerance for others," said Rabehi.
